Why does Drake support Drupal 5 and higher?

I’ve been asked this question a couple of times the past few days. Some people wonder why Drake is packaged as a module only compatible with Drupal 5.x and higher, being that there are still many Drupal 4.7 installations available. The main reason that drove me to this decision is that Drupal 5 revamped most of its API, mainly on its support for forms, which makes it a pain to give support to both versions of Drupal. It gets even worst if you plan to support older versions such as Drupal 4.6.

Eventhough the module could easily work on older versions of Drupal by changing only its administration interface, I plan to only support Drupal 5.x and above because it gives you an incentive to upgrade. Drupal 5 is far better than its predecesors, and there’s currently a lot of effort (coming from the Drupal team) to convince you to upgrade. If you are still undecided, you should check Drupal’s website, as it gives you clear documentation on how to achieve a succesfull upgrade.

    Great, man!

I always liked Drupal, but can’t leave CakePHP in my projects so it’s awesome!

    Cheers from .ar!

Is there any plan to integrate this wonderful module with Drupal Access Control?

@William: Very good question. That’s the idea behind Drake callables, I’m thinking two things:

    1. To add new Drake callables so you can get information such as: current user log in, etc.

    2. To let your CakePHP application “hook up” to Drupal’s API hooks (such as to be called when a user is logging in, etc.)

What’s the speed & resource expense of bootstrapping Drupal, then CakePHP? The performance must be pretty bad. I love the idea of combining the two though.

    Hi,
    Very nice module.
Do you have plans to extend this module for Drupal 6?
